Local Alberta Weather: Current and Forecasts

Curious about local weather patterns and trends in Alberta?

Next to bragging about which community enjoys or endures the most weather, Albertans like to boast how their province compares with the warmest, snowiest or the windiest in the country. To settle which jurisdiction can legitimately lay claim to being tops in weather, Environment Canada analyzed 30 years of recent weather data.

Click here, for some entertaining insights on how Alberta's weather compares with the rest of the country (rated #1 for most sunny days year-round = 312.4 days).
In general, Alberta's climate is continental. That means summers are much warmer than winters and daytime high temperatures are a lot higher than night time lows.

Also we measure our temperatures on the Celsius scale, so the weather reports may sound cold to those guests who are used to Fahrenheit temperatures!

As you would expect, temperatures in the southern part of the province are usually warmer than in the north. In July, the warmest month, daily average temperatures, including nighttime, range from about 18°C in the south to 13°C in the north and western mountains. Midwinter average temperatures typically range from -10°C in the south to -24°C in the north.

Alberta Weather is usually warm and sunny between May and October. Alberta is a comparatively dry province. Temperature and the weather can vary greatly, especially in the mountains, so it is a good idea to be prepared. In summer, bring a warm sweater and a raincoat along with your bathing suit!. When rain comes it usually doesn't last long, and travel is rarely interrupted.

The winters are sunny and inviting. Just so you know, even on the coldest days of winter, bright sunshine sparkles off the snow. In winter, make sure you have a couple of warm sweaters along with winter coat, hat, gloves and boots.

The coldest Alberta temperature on record was -54°C, while the highest temperature was 46°C.
